Slumberland Helps After Apartment Fire

Apartment Fire interior

A large fire broke out at a Mandan apartment complex early Thursday morning around 1:00 am on April 11 . The fire engulfed two neighboring 8-plex apartment buildings, resulting in the complete destruction of all units. While twelve units were occupied and deemed a total loss, two lower-level apartments sustained less damage, but the beds were destroyed.

Thankfully, all families evacuated safely, without any injuries. However, the beds in these apartments are now unusable, leaving 28 individuals, including adults and children displaced.

In response to this tragedy, 40 Winks, our program dedicated to providing new beds to children, extends its support to all when such a tragedy occurs.American Red Cross and the Slumberland Bismark’ s store are working diligently to ensure these familiesreceive the new beds they need for a good nightssleep as they transition to new accommodations.

Slumberland Supports 2022 Bedrace for Bridging with Title Sponsorship

The annual Slumberland Furniture Bedrace for Bridging took place on Saturday, March 12th, at Buck Hill in Burnsville.

Creatively dressed teams of four raced against each other, zipping down the tubing hill atop custom-covered mattresses. The event raised funds for Bridging, a local nonprofit that assists more than 4,000 families annually as they pursue housing stability and fill their homes with hope.

Participants enjoyed friendly racing, chats by the bonfire in the Slumberland Lounge, and awards. Best of all, they helped support Bridging.

A special shout out to Slumberland’s own Autumn Rhodes from Shakopee, who represented Slumberland. Well done, and thanks for participating, Autumn!

Start gearing up for next year… We hope to see more Slumberland employees attend. It truly is a fun and festive event. The best part is you will be helping a great cause!

Homes for the Holidays: Coming Together, Despite the Weather

Each year, Homes for the Holidays is an opportunity for each Slumberland location to make an impact and help their community – as we say, Homes for the Holidays is our most important mattress event of the year.

This year in West Fargo was no exception, although blizzard conditions prevailed on the day of the event. General Manager Derick Vettleson and his store team had connected with many community partners – the Salvation Army, Knights of Columbus, local mayors, local news stations, and more were all ready to contribute.

The day before the event brought snow and winds at 50 MPH, and news stations reached out to say blizzard coverage would likely take precedence over Homes for the Holidays. But at 3:30 AM on the 6th – the day of the event – Derick received an email from a reporter asking if they could still make the broadcast happen. Starting at 5:10 AM, their live broadcasts focused on the premise that they were still bringing mattresses to kids despite the weather conditions.

While difficult travel conditions made it impossible for some people to attend, three local mayors stopped by. Mayor Dardis of West Fargo sent the following response to the event, which perfectly sums up the community value that Homes for the Holidays offers.

“Thank you again for your efforts for these people in need. The generosity of Slumberland and you is amazing. I am honored and privileged to tell my fellow Commissioners and the public that the West Fargo Slumberland helps these people in need in this manner. Your corporate culture is one to be admired and envied.”

Congratulations to Derick and the entire West Fargo team. You have truly embodied the mission of Homes for the Holidays, 40 Winks, and Slumberland as an organization. Now, let’s bring the same holiday cheer and compassion to all of our Slumberland communities!

Over $30,000 Raised for 40 Winks

A beautiful day was enjoyed by all the golfers who attended our annual Slumberland Open held in the Twin Cities this month!  This year’s tournament marked its 38th consecutive year, raising over $30,000, making this our best year ever!

All of the donations raised from this event go directly to buying mattresses for children and youth sleeping on the floor, and thanks to the generosity of the attendees, sponsors, and donors of this event, we will be able to impact over 250 lives.

Thank you to all who attended, supported, or volunteered at this event, giving Kids a chance to dream

Ribbon cutting and 40 beds given in E. Peoria

Slumberland was welcomed into the East Peoria community this week, holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside our newest store.

We were honored to have the East Peoria mayor kick the event off, with attendance from the Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Slumberland employees, and business leaders of the community.  Kenny Larson shared about who we are, our mission and values, and how excited we are to be in the city.

Michael Larson introduced one of our traditions of opening a new store, gifting 40 new beds from our 40 Winks Foundation to local charity partners that were selected prior to the event.

Tom Hoffa introduced the four selected charity partners that would receive the beds, and we heard about the amazing work each charity is doing.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the 40 beds were loaded onto the waiting trucks to be taken to the children and youth that have been sleeping on the floor.  We knew that night 40 kids would be sleeping in a bed of their own.

Welcome East Peoria, to the Slumberland family.

Donation goal reached for Slumberland Bedrace for Bridging

Going virtual for this year’s “Slumberland Bedrace for Bridging” did not stop us from reaching the goal of $100,000 raised to help Bridging!  A big thank you to all who helped to make this a great event, our Twin Cities Stores for collecting pillow donations from their communities, to our Twin Cities employees donating over 150 pillows!!!!  Thank you to Twin Cities Live and Steve Patterson for his Sleep Out raising three times his goal, and our Bloomington Store for hosting the live presentation of the Bedrace winners with host Chris Carr from K102.  “When good people get together, good things happen” as the founder (Fran) of Bridging has said over the years, and it did! Thank you.

A Picture Worth A Thousand Words

These 2 girls were so excited about their new beds, they documented it for all to see. We’re grateful to Good in the Hood, an inspiring Minneapolis-based service program, for giving them their beds from 40 Winks and for sharing the photo with us. You’re welcome, girls! Sleep well!

25 Years of Giving

Slumberland Donates 2,500 Mattress Sets To Kids Without Beds

Furniture Industry News Update –
12/7/2016

Slumberland Furniture recently announced that during the month of December,  it is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its signature annual Homes For the Holidays program by donating 2,500 brand new mattress sets to charity partners who then identify recipients who are sleeping on the floor and in need of beds.

On December 16, Slumberland is celebrating the Homes For the Holidays anniversary locally with an event at its warehouse, 3060 Centerville Road in Little Canada. Festivities include breakfast and remarks from Slumberland CEO Ken Larson about the history of Homes For the Holidays and the company’s 40 Winks Foundation. Representatives from Slumberland’s charity partners will also speak. Afterward, Slumberland employees will load 1,000 new mattresses, box springs, bed frames, pillows and mattress pads onto participating charity partners’ trucks, who are responsible for distributing the donations to families in need.

Home For the Holidays will also take place throughout the month at Slumberland stores in the 12 states it serves. Each Slumberland store is partnering with local community charities to find the families in need.

Local churches, organizations, and Slumberland employees are sewing adult and baby quilts. All quilts will be gifted to the charity partners for distribution with the beds.

One of Slumberland’s core values is giving back to the community and the company has given away over 30,000 beds to local charities to distribute since 1991. Locally, some of the charity partners Slumberland works with are Bridging, St. Anne’s Place, Arrive Ministries, Tubman, Union Gospel Mission, and Hospitality House.

“We’re pleased to have helped so many children by giving them a bed and thus, improving their lives with healthy sleep during the last 25 years. Knowing that there are still an incredible number of children without a bed means we have a lot of work left to do, work that we will do with a grateful heart,” said Slumberland CEO Ken Larson.

Homes For the Holidays started with Slumberland employees “adopting” families in need and individually delivering the bed sets themselves. Eventually, the program became too large to continue in that fashion, so charity partners were established to identify the families in need and deliver the donations.
